lower ball joint replacement

Post by dmwhiteoak »

Today I bit the bullet and disassembled my front end. I have a bad lower and a bad upper ball joint and different sides so I just decided to replace all four. The lower ball joints do not have bolts , I don't know what these are holding them in but they are not rivits. Is this common to have these pin like fasseners in these lower joints? Im headed back out to the barn in a couple of hours to try and get them off the arm. My question is , Do I grind these off or what? After reading what Karl said about the supply eventualy depleting on the arms I have to agree with him. Therefore Im going to clean everything up and replace the ball joints. Not the easiest way but I have the time and I think the ability to do it. The hardest part so far is figuring out how to get these lower joints off the arm.

they are rivets, Just be careful you don't damage the arm around the holes when you cut/grind/chisel the heads off. Inspect the arms for cracks around those holes also

Yes, but grind the balljoint side, as to not damage the a-rm, then hammer them through.

What supply is depleting?
