preparing for new pain

Post by spider2081 »

I have a 1981 Spider I am getting ready for painting. The passenger door strikes the fender when full open. When the door is closed the door lines up very well within it's opening so I don't think it's an adjustment. I am looking at the door stop itself as the problem. Problem is when checking other cars I see the door stop inside the door jam where the mounting bolts are but outside the jam on the fender side on 2 cars and completely inside the door jam on 2 other cars. What is the correct way for the door stop to be installed??
Also the center side trim is pop riveted to the fenders and doors. The vinyl has lost its color to the sun. Does anyone know where to get new side moldings or the vinyl insert?? I know new side moldings just stick on but I would like to keep the original.

thanks

Thanks for the photos. I tried placing the stop in both positions. It stops the door a little farther from the fender when installed inside the jam. Even there the right door is closer to the fender then the left. Not sure why. Maybe I'll swap stops and see if that changes anything.

I really though I typed "Preparing for new paint" in the subject kind of funny it came out pain becaise all these little details in getting ready for the paint is a pain. LOL

Did you check for the dreaded crack in the door (around where the hinges enter the door)???

Thanks, Yes I did check for the cracks. The drivers door has been welded once but still has some play. The passenger door appears to be just started to crack. I'm not sure what is the best fix for this. The metal inside the door sure is thin for the weight of the door. I have kept the hinges oiled and free but it's an old car.

All suggestion welcome
