My kids are older and huge. <{:^) Would be trouble fitting 'em in the front! But that sure looks like fun for the little fellow!

Re: floor padding
Hey Charlie,
I got the files from Don (don.raugust@yahoo.com) and went to a local print shop to have them printed actual size. The templates cost $10 to print. Once I cut the templates, I dry fitted them to make sure they fit my '74.

Re: floor padding
Good point. I believe the Dynamat-type padding goes with foil toward the passenger area. It is primarily for sound insulation, so the "goop" must contact the body metal. The olefin felt padding (made from recycled water bottles) is recommended by mfgr. to go with the foil side down. It also provides sound insulation, but is primarily for use on floors, even over Dynamat if you want more carpet padding. Dynamat is also used inside of doors, roofs, fenders etc. for sound deadening. IMHO, Dynamat is a better sound treatment and the olefin felt is a better heat insulator, with the foil put TOWARD the heat source, such as floor above the catalytic converter or inside the firewall. I would avoid any type of FOAM padding - the olefin is much tougher.boogiedude wrote:Dynamat is actually a tar like sheet with a foil backing. Thick, heavy goop not foam. That up there is an actual carpet padding, dynamat is purely a sound deadner/insulator.

Re: floor padding
Your welcome guys, the patterns worked great for me so I make them available to all.
I did these patterns from PICS that foster48x posted a while back of his paper patterns (I had no original carpet to work off of), all worked great for me (and to others I have passed them to it seems) so many thanks to foster48x for the original post!!!!

Re: floor padding
Hi,
I'll add my thanks to Don as well, I think I'll be using an upholsterer for the carpet, I like the Sliverlite material, but I'll be cutting and fitting the sound blocker and padding myself and the templates will be a great help, missing carpet pieces as I am.
I'll be laying jute over foil-backed butyl, then carpet over that: What are my options for securing the jute and carpeting on the floor pans, without gluing them down? I "inherited" a bodged floor repair I want to have re-done properly some day not this year.
My first-cut thought is industrial velcro on the seats crossmember and firewall.
Any thoughts, anyone?
Thanks,
Mark
PS Can anyone save me the brain damage and tell me what the Spider carpeting materials requirement, how many yards at what minimum dimensions, is?

Re: floor padding
I would encourage you to consider olefin/polyester felt rather than jute, as jute is organic, and will absorb water and rot. Olefin will dry out faster, and will not rot or stink.

Re: floor padding
I have very little experience with this, but I will add this to the discussion: My car (purchased in November, now in winter storage) has the felt/jute type padding under the carpet. It got somewhat wet, but not flooded, when the rear window blew out and we had a small rainfall about a month ago. Not a heavy rainfall. The padding is still damp and stinks a little. I have pulled it away from the floor and it is all coming out in the Spring. I leave the car windows open while it is in the storage locker and it is slowly drying out due to low winter humidity, but I must say that this stuff sure holds water.

Re: floor padding
I note you are "up north", so if you use velcro rather than spray adhesive, I suggest you REMOVE all padding and carpet for winter storage, since there will be air space that traps moisture. As far as measurements, I used 2 rolls of this: http://www.stockinteriors.com/HeatSound.asp?Itemid=4783 I used a tough but inexpensive "cornrow" (close to original weave pattern) outdoor carpet from a local farm store: 4 linear feet of the 12 ft. wide was plenty (I had old carpet for patterns.)opus10583 wrote:Hi,

(Just like horses, whenever possible, cars should not be "put away wet!")

Just cuious as to what you are going to use a sound/heat barrier as well as under padding. I have a contact for a local place that sells POR 15 at wholesale costs.Adam wrote:Hey Charlie,

Re: floor padding
The EZ Cool is a sound and heat barrier... just glued it in place and laid the carpet over top.

Re: floor padding
I plan to use it strategically on the firewall and transmission tunnel, into the passenger floor, for heat.Adam wrote:The EZ Cool is a sound and heat barrier... just glued it in place and laid the carpet over top.
...The noiseblocker for that, and the jute for underfoot feel - even more important as the cost of the carpet I want is a good bit more than estimated.
Thanks,
Mark

Re: floor padding
Isn't noise blocking in a convertible an oxymoron? The car is quieter with the new insulation and carpet... but it's no lexus.

Re: floor padding
I think low frequencies (rumbles, etc) come through the floor and sides and are fatiguing. Certainly hard to minimize the high frequencies through the top/open area.

Re: floor padding
I'm planning on using this heat shielding from amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/CSI-25070-Heat-Sh ... B000RPG0DO
It is fairly cheap, but has aluminum which should do a good job of blocking out engine and transmission heat, which I am more concerned about than noise.
The tranny tunnel tends to get pretty hot, and I am hoping that some of this will help.
