Oil Pan Plug Size?
Howdy,
What type and size tool do I use to remove the drain plug?
Thanks,
Clint

If you cannot get an allen key, as a stop gap measure, get 2 or 3 nuts the right size and weld them together side by side to form a short hexagonal stub/shaft. slip one end in a socket and the other up into the sump bung. Then order a hex plug to suit your socket handle for next time.
Re: Oil Pan Plug Size?
out of all the things the POs did wrong with my car, one of the things they did right was leave me with the tiny leather tool kit in tact - within it lies the wrench for this purpose. I forgot I stored the kit in a tub of parts, and spent the better part of a day going to places in search of one that was the right size. I then gave up and searched for the nuts, and/or a bolt with the proper sized head. Even that yielded nothing. Hope you have better luck than I did. I'm pretty rural and didn't check at the one sure-fire place for the bolts/nuts -->FASTENAL. they have everything!!! Anyway, good luck.

if you think a 12 mm was hard to find, go back out and look for a 13mm allen wrench/hex key..... commonly used nowhere today, this is the size of the cam cover bolts for the early Spiders, up to '74 i think. most kits go up to a max of 10mm.

13mm is the same as 1/2", so it shouldn't be too hard to get one. If nothing else you could make one out of a bolt and nuts
Re: Oil Pan Plug Size?
is that one of those hidden trade secrets? Is it like a bakers dozen? 13mm is > 1/2 inch, I guess you could use 1/2 in a 13mm hole, but it's not the same size.So Cal Mark wrote:13mm is the same as 1/2", so it shouldn't be too hard to get one. Re: Oil Pan Plug Size?
nearly an 1/8th inch off. that difference will promote slippage and rounding any hex hole with any amount of torque applied.
if i were to cobble something up, i'd get me a 9/16" hex driver and lightly grind down the six sides until it fit exactly.
the nuts on the bolt trick (as detailed in the link i provided) and as Mark Allison offered is the best substitute for any missing hex drivers.

Thats what I did. Buy a 6 inch long bolt with a 1/2 inch hex head about $1. Put the bolt in a vice and bend a 90 degree angle about 1 inch from the head. File three sides of the hex head untill it will fit in the drain plug. I only need to use it one more time since I just got a magnetic oil drain plug that can be removed with an open end wrench.
Anybody need a slightly used home made oil drain plug wrench ?
B.T.W. A 19mm and 3/4" wrenches are interchangeable. Good for removing that long alternator mounting bolt, I've done it several times this week.

i have that wrench, maybe even 2 of them. last week i replaced that plug with a magnetic one that uses a socket or wrench. you can pick the magnetic plug up on ebay. you will still need the wrench for the tranny though, im not sure about the rear end though. you have to ask mark, thats his specialty.
