Did this 2 wks ago, from the bottom with about 2 feet of extension and a universal at the std socket. My feet pointed toward the passenger side. Left hand fitted the socket blind and right held the ratchet. A flexable extension would be perfect for this. Anyway turned the steering wheel clockwise all the way and dropped it out, noting the orientation of the starter for when it goes back in. Could've mail ordered a replacement for $50. up (shipping included), but opted for a local rebuild for $100., next day pickup. It was almost as hard as the upper tranny bolt. Oh, also don't forget to clean/sand the mating surfaces because the starter grounds out to the bellhousing.

The PO installed the starter with the bolt heads in the transmission tunnel. The only way to access them is either to drill holes in the tunnel or drop the transmission. When I pull the engine and transmission to have them painted I will install the new gear reduction starter from Allison Automotive. Thank you all for your advice and suggestions,

That is the correct way for the starter to be mounted. The threads are in the starter itself, so the bolts go through the bellhousing, into the starter. Bolt head being on the transmission side of the starter/trans mating area. Many of the ways outlines by other members are correct ways to access it. It's really not all that hard to do, It should only take about 30 minutes-1hr to change a starter out including the time needed to take out the bolts and put them back in

I had to pull my manifold off as well, but it was still a pain...

I had no help, and no super long extentions...mine went as follows:

- short 13mm socket with small bit of paper towel stuffed in the edge to "hold" followed by
- u joint followed by
- standard (4") extension followed by
- 8 inch extension followed by
- socket wrench

My procedure was as follows (for top bolt, bottom bolts were ridiculously easy)

I would take the assembled tools, and drop them socket wrench first into the trans cavity, the socket wrench would end up laying on a cable, maybe a trans cable or maybe ebrake cable, i didnt really care at the time...

This would give me the opportunity to put the socket on the bolt, the paper towel helped it grip and not fall right off of the bolt.

I would then get under the car and start turning the wrench...this was good for a few turns until the socket slipped off again, at which point i would repeat the process...

Was able to get the starter out from the top by wiggling it out, only the manifold and carb came off

I would like to ask a serious question. The starter on my 76 went tits up, pooped the bed, took a crap, checked out of the building or what ever phrase you would like to use. Now I know it is a pain in the keyster to change the starter and will require the liberal use of installation fluid. The question is which of the many brands available is the best to use? :D
