Smog mystery continued

Post by fp2112 »

Thanks so much to everyone who has helped me so far. I am still working toward passing California Smog with my 1978 Spider. I learned recently (after watching smoke puff from the wrong hoses) that my diverter valve was history. I opened it up and confirmed my suspicions. Any suggestions on where I can find a replacement? The old valve was a GM part. I am not sure if this was a quick fix for a previous owner or whether Fiat borrowed some smog parts from GM. Either way any help would be appreciated. Also...I am still confused by the EGR valve configuration. I thought I had it figured out when I found a driver's side valve cover on ebay that had the mounting points for the egr. Awesome! Until it arrived in the mail and I realized that it was missing the mounting points for the accelerator linkage. Not so awesome! I tried to post a link to some pics below but not sure if I am doing it correctly. Seems as if I solved the egr mystery then the accelerator linkage mounting issue popped up. Thanks in advance for any help.

Many smog parts came from GM. Have you asked Kelly at Wine Country Motors in Napa? He knows a lot about smogging Fiats.

On the '78 the EGR did not go through the driver's side valve cover. That was only in 1974 to early '77, when the EGR valves was mounted between the 2 camtowers. In '78 the EGR valve was to the right of the passenger side camtower, and there was a 2 piece tube that came from the manifold. I know a guy who just took all that stuff off his car, pls message me and I can send you his email.

Fiat did use GM check and diverter valves, as well as the air pump. Csaba is right about the cam cover, 78 didn't use the cover with the egr casting in it. The egr valve mounted on a bracket that fit under the front two exhaust cam housing bolts in 78

Thank you for the help. I am beginning to think that the engine in this car is actually a pieced together 1977. When I ordered the valve guides for the head I realized that I needed 14mm OD which are consistant with a 1977 rather than a 1978. The engine number is 132AI.031.5 which is consistent with a California car 1976-1978. The serial number stamped on the engine is 0467557 (not sure what this means.) Also the bracket that So Cal Mark mentions to hold the egr is not on the car. With all that said...any suggestions? I think I can get most parts (including a cam cover that accomodates both the egr mount and the accelerator linkage.)

the cars that had the egr mounted off the intake cam cover used a throttle cable and not hard linkage. The 78 style egr is much easier to deal with since it mounts in a more accessible position
