Hey guys,
Looking into trading for a 75 but the oil pan gasket leaks pretty good. I have called a couple shops who say they can do it, but it will run me about 800 bucks. They are quoting 10 hours labor to do it. I have pulled the motor out of, and replace it, in my 99 Camaro twice now and I imagine that this would be easier since there is less electronic BS to have to hunt down and plug in. Is this a job that you think I could do with an equally inclined buddy and a weekend in the garage? Or is the 10 hour quote absurd to begin with? Thanks. I drove the car and everything felt great and it was a blast, runs good, doesn't smoke, but it smells like it's burning oil because of it dripping back onto the exhaust. Thanks.

Re: Oil Pan Gasket Replacement
If you lived near me, I'd do it for a 1/4 of that. or less. I helped a fellow earlier this year in taking the pan off with the engine still in. We took the engine mount nuts off, think we too the tranny support as well and jacked the engine up enough to get at the oil pump. We installed a new pan gasket and put it all back together. Took us a couple of hours at most and we were not mechanics.

Re: Oil Pan Gasket Replacement
10 hours is absolutely ridiculous. If you can slip the gasket by the oil pump then you don't even need to take the pan off.
Even if the pan needs to come off there is no reason they couldn't do it in 3 hours or so.
If you are mechanically inclined you can do it, but it's a bit of a PITA.

Thanks guys, all of this is pretty re-assuring. I am still considering the car as I am sort of afraid it may be viewed as a mid-life-crisis car (I'm only 22). I will say it was fun to drive though. I'm torn.... especially since my truck runs great and I already have a 99 camaro z28. I do think this car will be worth more than my truck however should I decide not to keep it.

So many places it could be leaking, likely not just the pan gasket.

a lift would be nice...took me much longer on my back on a cold garage floor just to pull the tranny
Re: Oil Pan Gasket Replacement
I replaced my oil pan gasket, and the toughest part by far was removing the oil pump and then re-installing it with the engine still in the car (just lifted). I had to bang out my oil pan because I'd hit a curb with it, so I had to take it off all the way (and therefore remove the oil pump as well). If you don't actually have to remove the pan and can get the gasket on without having to remove the oil pump then I think it'll be relatively easy, though I'm not sure how easy it'll be to scrape and clean the old gasket off without taking the whole pan out.
