Floor pan rust (help with my ignorance)RESOLVED

Post by 4uall »

During some (what I thought) regular maintenance I discovered I actually had some rust in the form of a small hole where the plug was drivers side Arrrrrrrrggggggghhhh :evil: I went looking for floor pan replacements so I can have someone weld it for me then will seal properly etc. In looking I couldn't help but notice some significant price differences $50 - $275 from sites I have used recently (all seem to have same quality ). So I throw this question to the forum why the $ difference and who to use?

if its not that big you could kill the rust and seal it up

when you do everything correct people arent sure youve done anything at all (futurama)

@124joe
over 30 views and you are the only response lol As of Jan 3rd 2012 I will be bringing it in to a recommended Fiat workshop here in town that does great work. They will remove and replace, seal etc as good if not better than new. I wanted to try and do it myself for the whole learning process and pride of ownership however, this should best be left to the experts in my opinion.

I have to agree with 124joe. I noticed that he had used some Permatex rust converter and tried it for myself. As long as it is just surface rust, you can sand it down a bit, then paint a thin layer of the stuff over it. Voila! Rust is gone. Then you can paint over it or whatever you like. If you have a large hole in the floorboard like I do and don't want to do it yourself, then yea, send it in. Otherwise a treatment like I mentioned will be a heck of a lot cheaper and easier.

hmmmm... well personally I would cut out a square around that and weld in a new piece of sheet metal, because it would be much cheaper than a floor pan, but you said you didn't want to do that yourself, right? Do you know anyone who could do that bit for you? If you did, then I would have them grind the rest of the good metal bare and give it a fresh coat of rust-o-leum at the very least.

@blurple124 Trust me I would love to do this myself however, I have zero welding experience. I love this car so much it would kill me to make a mistake or damage her. As mentioned above the local Fiat paint shop is going to help me out and they have come highly recommended by the Italian Car Club of Ottawa. They are not replacing the pan just making the repair (as you suggested).
