Whistling Noise turned to Sucking sound

Post by clarkedj »

Hey Guys,

The whistling noise in my sons 78 1800 CC has changed to a sucking sound ( other then the money coming from my wallet)very much like a vacum leak. It is not coming from the carb. The noise is coming from the passenger side of the engine. I have disconnected the brake booster and blocked the tube. Not sure what other areas I should check. If it's not an external hose or connection does it mean that the head gaeket is blown and needs to be replaced?

Thanks

I've never heard a head gasket whistle. If your car still has the emission controls, the air pump system or egr could be the cause. Both of those are on the passenger side

Mark and 124,

Thanks for the response. When I bought the car I had the mechanic Dave in Duluth Ga. remove all the emission from the engine and plugged all the hoses. Unfortunetly Dave went out of business and I am stuck with no mechanic. The car is not leaking coolant and does not overheat. I replaced the radiator about a year ago and just replaced the external thermostat. I was thinking of draining the oil to see if coolant was present. There is no oil in the coolant. The car does pool oil around the plugs but it is a very slow leak only pools over a period of months. As I wrote in an earlier post could a damaged cat have caused an excessive amount of back pressure that might have blown something?

Thanks

if the cat is plugged, the car will be seriously down on power. as others have said, the gas out the exhaust pipe will be very slow and lazy even with the engine revved.

a plugged cat can cause exhaust leaks around the manifold. I really doubt you have head gasket issues. I'd try to pinpoint the noise using a stethoscope or hose

the vent hose for the crank can deteriorate and kink
that will presureize the lower end --- and vent up thru the dist
its the big hose that goes to the carb from under the intake
just above the mec fuel pump
you should replace both the short one and the long one
if ether one is cracked of riped open

good luck
