Intermittant stalling

Post by rlux4 »

There are 2 metal support plates under the dash, below the glove box on my '82 Spider. One is holding the ECU, the other has about 5 elctrical connectors mounted to it. Every once in a while as I'm driving the engine will die. I have found that if I reach under and tap the one holding the connectors, the car will fire back up. It may be OK for several days, it may do it again several times in a row. I've dropped the plates and checked all the connections, everything looks OK. Also, the ECU has what looks like mounting flanges on it, but it just sits loosely in the "J" shaped holder plate. Should it be mounted solidly for ground? Anyone have any ideas what could be causing this? Thanks, Ron

the one relay on that plate that could cause your trouble is the dual relay. That controls all of the FI functions; injectors and fuel pump. Make sure the spade terminals in the connector fit tightly onto the relay. Try tapping the relay and see if that causes stalling. It may be time to replace that relay. The ECU itself doesn't need to be grounded, it grounds through the wiring harness

Thanks Mark, Uh... which one is the dual relay? There is one that is a meatal cased unit, it has an external diode, or transistor thingy on it, but it looks hard-wired. Ron

the dual relay is black plastic, and has two separate connectors plugged into it.
