I am cleaning and installing new seals in a set of calipers and one of the rear caliper has damaged threads on the bleeder. The bleeder was tight and worked when I removed it but its is so wobbly when I thread in another bleeder I am worried it might strip when I go to tighten it.
Can some one tell me what the threat size is of a stock bleeder? I plan to install a heli coil.
Thanks

Re: brake bleeder thread size
I have since been told its not wise to use heli-coils in calipers for brake bleeders. Does anyone know why??
Thanks

Re: brake bleeder thread size
because you cant drill it out perfectly and cut threads
i have a caliper that had a broken bleeder
i tryed to drill it out on a press and it was still off center
now its junk

Re: brake bleeder thread size
mine is 8x1.25. I heli-coiled a bleeder once, always leaked a tiny tiny amount, it lasted until a new caliper arrived . I should have welded it up and taken it to a machinist, probably not too expensive. Calipers in the states are stupid cheap.

Re: brake bleeder thread size
Thanks everyone for your replies. I decided to try a bleeder repair kit. It's a small bleeder assembly. I need to drill the caliper and tap for and 1/8" nipple pipe thread to install it. I have everything to do this just wondering if anyone has seen them or tried it.
Thanks
Thanks
Re: brake bleeder thread size
I wouldn't have a problem installing a helicoil in a bleeder. THe old threads are gonna help you get a good center, the aluminum should drill easily. Just don't drill into the bottom of the hole...that taper against the bleeder itself is what seals. The threads do not provide the seal. And I would do heli before some......bleeder repair kit?? And like was said, it is 8x1.25

Re: brake bleeder thread size
I made that mistake and sure enough the bleeder leaked, the bleeder did not seal at the bottom. Tried to find longer bleeder screws but was not able to find any locally. I think I still have the caliper if anyone has access to longer threded bleeders.majicwrench wrote: Just don't drill into the bottom of the hole.

Re: brake bleeder thread size
I counter sunk the hole for the bleeder on one of mine so the bleeder could sit in another 1/8 ".
