Wow, the haynes manual does say that! Cept it call it "pinking" in my edition. Why bother with marks and timing lights!

BEEK, is that timing only for modified engines? Or does it work well for stock engines too?

i have run it on my stock cars, and customers cars for years with no problems.

Finally I got back to the car and went to the "ear tune" which is always a good option. What I wasn't doing previously was resetting the idle screw and trying to tune it by the idle mixture screw and advancing the timing. Got the engine to a nice warm idle, advanced the distributor to "sputter" backed it off a little, revved it a few times, no blubber no back fire. Took it out on the road, no hesitation and good acceleration, power is where it ought to be. I haven't checked the timing to see where it may be at but right now it runs and I will solve any other problems later. It now feels road worthy. thanks. psg
