Hello everyone.
I hope this is posted in the right part of the forum.
Im a total noob with cars.
I acquired a 1973 Spider 850 with a host of minor issues that need to be worked out.
right now, my main issue is the carb, or at least i think it's the carb.
THe engine started running really weak and rough. The max i can get out of it is 45mph. I had to drive it with choke all out, otherwise it would sputter and stall on me. Took it to the mechanic, he basically tried to clean it, and then gave up, telling me he dont have the "tools" to do the job, and that he just cleaned the carb a bit. (didnt charge me anything).
So right now i got people suggesting that the carb gasket might have a hole in it, and that that may be the issue.
I have purchased the carb repair kit if necessary.
before i take it up to the carb place and have some1 take a look at it, I would like to hear some expert opinions. if you need more info, i will gladly provide.
1. i have been using regular fuel in it.
2. the car has not been maintained much lately, as i know very little about cars.
3. 58k miles.
4. as far as i know its WEBER 30 DIC carb.
any info would be welcome.
Thx.
Carb issue? pls hlp
Re: Carb issue? pls hlp
you could have a jet that is restricted with dirt. There are several gaskets that could fail, but it would be rare for a gasket to fail without being removed or disassembled. Does the car idle? Your engine should have points in the dist, they may be worn and barely opening.
Re: Carb issue? pls hlp
the car does idle, but with a full out choke.
it drives, though with choke all the way out. very slow, very weak. once the choke is closed, the engine sputters and slowly dies out.

Sounds like you need to find a qualified carb guy.....which is getting tougher. If the engine will only function with choke out, that's a pretty good indication that the carb has some issues. This is a very simple carb and easy to rebuild. If it is full of water and/or rust, then ya gott head to the tank.
Good luck
Good luck
Re: Carb issue? pls hlp
you can't expect the engine to rev with the choke fully closed, not enough air can pass through. You may have a low speed jet that is clogged or a large vacuum leak
Re: Carb issue? pls hlp
thank you both for your insight. being that i'm totally clueless about carbs, i will take it to the carb mech and hopefully get this thing done.
your feedback is appreciated. if anyone else has any ides, please feel free to chime in.
