New 124 Spider Owner

Post by jacksplace »

Hi All:

Name is Jack and I'm a new 1978 124 Spider owner. I purchased the car on EBay and will pick it up on Thursday. I live in Yuma AZ and will pick the car up in Riverside CA. I won't trust it so I'll take a car hauler for the trip. I just sold a very nice 1971 MGB GT (photos available at spitta.com/mg/ I've owned numerous Brit and German cars over the years (1952 MG TD was first). Now I guess I'll need to learn some Italian! If my new purchase is worth the effort it should look as good as the GT within a year.

congrats on winning the auction! I'm sure you'll be impressed with the Spider performance compared to an MG. Be sure and post some pix once you get the car. What condition is it supposed to be in?

Mark:

I'm told that the machine is rust free (I hope so). Also, the seller says that the engine and gear box are strong. 117,000 miles on the clock but if it's been well cared for and and not too many miles since important work on the engine then it'll be OK. To me the important thing is rust but I'll trailer it home just in case. I'll be taking pics before, during and after the work.

Mike:

Thanks. I'll need help with parts suppliers. Unfortunately, Yuma is not a hotbed of sports car enthusiasts. I was able to get a lot of help from the MG BBS but nobody knew what an MG was in Yuma. I'm sure it'll be the same for the Spider.

I believe there are some other forum members in AZ, these cars should last a long time in the rust-free atmosphere there. I'm only about a half hour from Riverside, so if you need anything while you're here feel free to contact me. Wk ph is 909-981-3566

Jack,

Jim Fierst of Whoa Brakes is in Arizona. Look him up.

Also, one of the best ways to get the help you'll be needin' are these forums. Most guys willing and able to provide the "right" answer are scattered around the country.

Welcome to our little community.

It appears that this BBS is populated by very helpful enthusiasts just as the MG board is. Thank you and I'm sure that I'll take advantage of your knowledge in the future.

Congratulations, and welcome to the club. I have a '78 also. It's a wonderful car -- just don't let it be your only car. :D

Michael:

Thanks for the reply. It's not my only car (that would be scarey). I'm not sure that I'll even take on the project but right now it looks as though I will.
