Idle solenoid removed but working fine?!

Post by Doctorwire »

I have a 78 1800cc with the 32 adfa carb. I noticed that my idle stop solenoid has been removed and the hole capped with a bolt. The car runs fine (when it was together..it's apart for restoration right now) and i never had a starting, idling or acceleration problem. Question is: should i put one in when i rebuild the carb? has anyone else come across this?

The idle stop solenoid was designed to shut off the fuel flow to the idle circuit to minimize the tendency to "diesel" or run on. Removing it will not affect much beyond increasing the possibility of run on. Given how much else has been futzed with on the car I am sure there are other pressing problems with the car due to the former owners.

the idle stop solenoid has the low speed jet on the end of it. Without that in place your fuel mixture should be VERY rich

I think that might be the case. Is there a rebuild kit that comes with the jet and solenoid or do i have to get the solenoid seperately?

Personally I would ditch the OE smog carb and go to an alternative one that would improve performance and offers a idle needle valve so you have more opportunity to adjust the carb. Living in Ontario I doubt they smog a car of this age.

That's probably a good idea. After 20 years they don't do emission tests.

A 34ADF would bolt in, but it's a bit expensive. A 32/36DFEV needs a few small mods, but it's more reasonably priced.
