Vacuum Advance

Post by Kabong »

Greetings,
I am diligently chasing an issue with my ride that I could use a bit of help on. I have connected a hose to the vac advance and when I suck or blow on it I am not holding vacuum, there is some resistance (definitely not sealed), but no movement in the advance. Is this unit dead?

Thanks

Sounds like it. The diaphragms in those are pretty fragile and get cooked from the heat of the exhaust. You can get replacement vacuum units through the usual vendors, or you can lock the advance and eliminate the vacuum cansiter

I think this is a good enough excuse to put on one of those electronic jobs.

the replacment part will last 10 even 15 years
the fire ball worked for me "still" but costs more than a vacume advance
when you do everything correct people arent sure youve done anything at all (futurama)

the replacement vacuum advance units will not last 10 years. I've found these replacement units to be of very poor quality and won't last beyond 6 months, and most likely alot less than that. And they've sorta pricey too

Retaining the vacuum advance will improve the mileage and the way the car runs, so if possible, it should be replaced.

My ride has the dipstick crossing over the area where the ignition I just ordered from you. Is that going to be a problem? Also is there a template to bend the alternator bracket, or do you also sell those?

The one on my car lasted over 6 years, with trips to Detroit, South Carolina, Arkansas, South Texas, etc etc.

well, your experience is different than many of my customers. We quit carrying them since they had no warranty and some only lasted 30 days. I now modify the advance for full mechanical and it works just great

I second what Mark is saying. I bought a new one and it lasted about six weeks. I was so dissapointed that I quit running a vacuum advance and plugged the line. We have pretty stringent smog laws here in Ca. and I pass fine without it. (I'm just saying.) My mileage is around 26 mpg, with mostly around town driving, frequent 2-300 mile drives, and the occasional 2000 mile trip.

Mine has been fine for 7,000 miles in 10 months.

I have to chime in...

About a year ago we sourced OE vacuum advances... In that time we have sold almost 40 units. And as I recall we have warrantied one unit. And that unit was defective immediately. I would suggest that there may be a lower quality unit being sold too and this one is causing the high failure rate.

No warranty? That's kind of weird, it's not an electrical item.

Without an exhaust manifold heat shield it will fail shortly, with the heat shield the unit will last much much longer. "Clocking" the distributor so the unit is closer to/over the cam box helps.

Warranty on a rubber diaphragm? I only wish the vendors would warranty parts like that. I recently had to replace some failed "new" rubber muffler hangers that were only on the car for 2 years. I replaced them with an original 30 year old rubber muffler hanger from a parts car that was in perfect shape. Many of the rubber bits currently being made are not as durable as the originals.

Thanks for the heads up Ramzi. I know I'd get better mileage with one, but I did the math and if I was going to replace the unit every other month I wouldn't have been saving any money!
