Got my 77 spider on the road for the first time this summer (Melbourne, Australia) and driving beautifully for a few hours on country roads until I geared down at a T-intersection. I had the stereo pretty high but heard a loud bang underneath in the gearbox and then I had no acceleration in any gears, well virtually none. I can drive the car at a max of 15kmh in 1st, but thats it.
The clutch seems fine, engaging as usual, the gears still move freely, but there's a slight whining underneath. Basically cant go anywhere.
Any suggestions as to what might have happened?
Am I up for a complete overhaul?
Cheers//Simon
Gearbox - Loud Bang
Re: Gearbox - Loud Bang
Ummm...... that really sounds like the clutch. Pull the tranny regardless. Unless you broke the input shaft gear, which I've only seen once in 25 years of working on these.

Simon,
So the engine revs up, but the car does not move? Likely a clutch issue, but I've also seen where all the teeth sheared off the front layshaft gear. Either way you need to pull the tranny and investigate.

Yes Vandor, the car revs up as usual, but barely moves on a level surface with a high pitched whining sound.......will take the general advice and drop the tranny and investigate
Re: Gearbox - Loud Bang
Diagnosis - the clutch plate disintegrated.
