Intake Mods 1979 Spider 2000

Post by kd1wo »

Just curious, has anyone attempted to mod the intake on a '79 model. Yes, this is the one with all the vacuum ports, a dual plane manifold.I'm considering machining the carb input planes to resemble a single plane manifold.
I'm thinking of doing this as the 2 litre head has the port for the EGR valve and the oil dipstick will be in the correct position.
Thanks for the input!

Pretty sure it would be easier and flow much better if you install an 1800cc manifold and use either an earlier dipstick or fabricate a bracket to hold the stock one. Block off the EGR.

Do you want to retain EGR for some reason? If so then you'll be hard pressed to modify that 2000cc carb manifold, it is cast with those runner separators. I also think, though I've never cut one open, that the space in between the two planes is full of coolant. There isn't a big plenum - uh - mixing chamber - like on all the other manifolds.

Thanks Brad for the input.
Since I had a spare manifold I took the plunge router ( with an end mill) to the manifold.
Mixed results. the OE carb 28/32 adha(?) needed additional jetting to "balance" the additional plenum size.
If I installed a 32 adfa, it ran too rich.
Finally, I took the advice of my learned colleague, Brad, and Installed a single plane intake from a 1800, blocking off the EGR on the block port and then installed the 32 adfa. Runs much better, much more power from the 1979 2 litre engine.
Thanks !
