Advice on leaking doors?

Post by MrWampus »

Having owned a spider previously, I am completely aware that these things are not very water tight. However, my new one is leaking around the forward door seals on both sides mostly from the bottom of the vent window up, the gap getting worse near the top. I thought about replacing the door seals and will probably do that but there is visible light coming through right at the top. The door gaps on both doors appear to be pretty straight and even. It's almost like the vent window frames have been slightly pulled outward from the top. If I drive in a decent rain, the water just pours in through the crack on the driver's side. It isn't as bad on the passenger side. Has anyone else had this problem? Remarkably, the top doesn't seem to leak anywhere, even around the top of the windows. Down the back windows where the velcro seals are seem fine too. I'm concerned about rusting the floor pan and ruining the carpets.

The position of the vent windows can be adjusted. You have to remove the door panel. There are two bolts near the top of the door and one inside near the bottom of the window track. If you cant adjust the vent windows forward enough, you might have to adjust the top frame back.

Thanks Matt, I had no idea the vent window frame could be adjusted. The previous owner had put a piece of foam weather stripping to try to stop the leaks. It looks awful and doesn't really help all that much. Next sunny day I'll pull the panel and see if I can get a better fit the correct way.

BTW, My uncle didn't come through on the retainer ring for the headlight toggle switch. I think you said you had a few. If you still do, I'd love to buy one from you. I do still have the little plate that says, "lights."

Check the seal plugs at the top of the door seal.

Thanks thefiatek, but it's a problem with poor alignment. With the door shut I see a daylight between where the vent window frame should seal tightly against the rubber seal. The rest of the door seals properly. I think Matt has the right idea.

(Matt, I just sent you an email about the ring.)
