what size engine would be most likely in a 74 124. considering it has never been modified?

An 1800.

I've never driven a 1608, so I can't say. My 74 with 1800 has noticeably less power and pep than the fuel injected 81, though.

say i got a 80 and it has the smog pump etc, what do u have to do to remove all that?

I think the 1800 is a great motor to rebuild. I am extremely happy with mine post build. You can read details in this thread.
