the early 77s still had interference motors, so with the belt problem you may have bent valves. I'd take a compression test

Well I had a chance to check the compression and I am getting zero compression in the 3 cylinders I checked (I gave up on checking the forth) so it looks like I have a valve problem.

Sounds like it. Time to pop the head I guess. Not a problem really,takes and hour or so.

FYI the local mechine shop would charge me around $175 if i have the parts for a head rebuild
when you do everything correct people arent sure youve done anything at all (futurama)

I just had the same problem except for the timing. she was popping through the carb. line up the timing marks and then make the correct cylinder ID. It goes 1 2 3 4. #1 is on the firewall side of the motor.

no, they set up the timing for #1.and the dist to #4
#1 is in front and #4 is at the firewall
when you do everything correct people arent sure youve done anything at all (futurama)

when u line up the rotor , as in firing order, u line it with # 4? on the cap?

yes it says that in the manual
point the rotor at #4 in the cap

i did that but point to 1 in the cap. maybe that why it runs a tad rough
