we're building a 2.0 for a customer and the car had heating problems. Upon inspection, we found a crack in #4 that went from port to port, under the valve seats.

Wow, that head looks pretty rough. I wonder if the gasket would even seal given those pits in the head right around where the gasket would be in the first picture?
Definite corrosion around the water jackets which wouldn't affect running, but it looks like some pitting around the plug hole too?
Nice looking pistons BTW

Re: Cracked Head!
Are you thinking the crack is the result of the overheating, or caused the overheating??
Re: Cracked Head!
the crack is the result of the overheating and the corrosion between the seats is from the water leaking through the crack. #4 cylinder wall showed the effect of water intrusion also. It's so rare to see these heads cracked, I thought I should post the pic

Re: Cracked Head!
I've got a 2 litre head where I had the EGR holes in the exhaust ports welded up, resulting in cracking between the port and a coolant gallery. It wasn't discovered until after it was installed. When the cooling system got up to pressure it would intermittently leak coolant into the exhaust port, resulting in clouds of white smoke out the exhaust.
