Tranny oil fill plug

Post by lchiaro »

Can anyone tell me which plug to use in filling the tranny and to check level after filling on my 1981 124 Spider Turbo?
There are two plugs, one right above the other on the passenger's side. Which is which? The top one is very hard.

The lower one is the fill plug. The upper one is a sensor switch -- leave it alone.

Make sure that you can remove the lower one before you drain your oil.
You wouldn't want to drain the oil, then find out that you can't fill it back up!

Thanks a lot. However seems that the fill plug is way below the transmission gears, it would seem that the gears are not submerged by the oil but are lubricated by the rotational forceof the same. Is this correct? Also, when checking the oil level, does the oil have to drip off the plug? One last thing, what is the best oil to use?
Thanks ever somuch and if you are ever in Italy, give me a shout.

There is a lot of information about transmission oil and related on the Forum.

Here is a thread that might be helpful:

In addition to the main drain plug, there's another smaller plug towards the back of the tranny (at least there is on my '78). it has a small square head - maybe an 8mm. To fill, I jacked up the fill-plug side of the car a bit & used one of those graduated measuring containers that has the tube attached and a little spigot on it (got it at walmart). get about three feet or so of clear tubing (5/8" diameter i think) attach that to the graduated container and feed it down from the top of the engine and into the fill hole. fill the container w/ the required amount of fluid, open the spigot, and off you go. i used Redline MT90 but there are a lot of different opinions on tranny fluid.
