Phasing in electronic ignition
Has anyone heard of phasing in an electronic ignition sys. I have looked hard for my miss and rough idle and I cannot come up with anyting other than this. I located the paper work on my Fireball 3000 and it said it has to be phased in. It said if not phased in rough idle and miss can be expected. Although it does require destroying a good distributor cap.The PO had never had it started after he installed it. So after a shower and a quick bite its back out to the shop. Dennis

Yup we have to "phase" distributors every now and then. Have never messed with the Fireball setup. Methinks however that you are grasping at straws. Still, it wouldn't hurt to check.

Checked the phase and it was off, set it right and timed ign. to 10deg above tdc. Set idle at 1000 rpm's and don't know if I did any good.Really didn't smooth it out much but no more miss at 3000 rpm's. Will test drive tomorrow.
Kieth, Straws are all I have. If I did nothing I would just be there staring at it like I seem to do alot of. Dennis

Re: Phasing in electronic ignition
Dennis,
Yup, It is best to knock a hole in the cap so you can see where the rotor tip aligns with the spark plug post in the cap. Now you can align the optical pick up (LED trigger light on the black box) to the rotor/post position. Adjust the mounting of the optical pick up untill you can see that the rotor is in the correct position, other wise the spark will have to jump to far to reach the spartk plug post. Too much in on direction will cause missing at higher speed and too far in the other direction will cause idle issues.

Re: Phasing in electronic ignition
Well, I seem to have got the miss out over 3000 rpm's but it change the whole tone of the exaust and idles rougher. I will try and head it back the other way to find a happy medium. The car backfired alot until I changed the timing back to about 30deg above tdc. I think I will just leave it here where it runs good. Dennis

Re: Phasing in electronic ignition
unless you're converting an existing electronic dist, I can't imagine the kit doesn't fit over the cam and align the rotor properly
Re: Phasing in electronic ignition
If it runs best with the timing set to 30deg above (before?) TDC you have something really off.

I am going by the marks on the belt cover (probably should not ) but thats about what it is. Anywhere close to the marks on the cover has no power.I will try and find a way to get a true mark.I believe I saw one on the block when I had the cover off.If your standing in front is before tdc on the left side of the timing marks on the cover? It has been many years since I have set timing on an engine.I know if you go the other way( we called that retard, thats probably what yall are calling me)
It will not run at all, will back fire before it dies. So ,I guess I am before TDC . Dennis

notice
to all who have the plastic top hat with the led and pickup
mine never grabed corectly "the newones are alot better"it finaly gave upand sliped around with every touch of the gas.
these old ones werent easy to setup from the begining, add ten or 12 years...well ya know.
as a fix my friend said to GRIND down the lobes to flat
i ended up wraping 2 layers of duct tape for the tophat to grab
it worked very well.joe
