I have a '71 with what I beliebve to be the stock rear end. It has recently started to make some noise and appears that the pinion bearing has gone bad. Is it possible to replace this bearing and seal without tearing down the whole rear end? If a tear down is necessary, I think I would rather replace the whole rear end with a used one. Is there a difference between rear ends in pre '74 vs '75 or later? Mounting points for springs and control arms…….

Rook,

We just had this discussion, look here:

http://www.fiatspider.com/f08/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=15

and there are others too. Try searching on rear end and differential.

I made the switch to a later rear with the 3.90 gear set and couldn't be happier. I'm actually glad now my original diff failed.

PM me if you want details on the switch.

Good luck.
