Does the size of a fuel filter matter?

Post by FiatJim »

I've seen several different sizes used. Does it matter? Also, what's better to use: metal, glass or plastic (can see through)?

the size will determine how often it needs to be changed. The see through are kind of nice for monitoring the amount of dirt in the system

I know a lot of people put one between the fuel tank and pump to protect the pump. One of our members had to replace his pump. Then another before the carb.

I hadn't thought about putting one before the fuel pump. Was his an electric pump?

I'd read some opinions about the plastic ones being melted by engine heat. Hasn't happened to me - but then again, it only has to happen once to really ruin a good day  I like the idea of being able to see the actual filter material.

I purchased the plastic clear ones from IAP and the solid aluminum ones from Auto Ricambi. I never thought about the engine heat. I was going to install the clear one in the engine bay. Maybe I'll switch them up and put the clear plastic one in the trunk. I wouldn't want it to melt.
He did have an electric pump.

I've never seen a plastic one melt, but then again I wouldn't lay it on the exhaust manifold either

I have installed a translucent plastic, small pre-filter between tank and electric pump on my FI car, and the standard metal filter in the pressurized FI fuel line after the pump. The pre-filter is a just-in-case filter, to monitor and change as often as required. Non-pressurized lines - easy, quick. Not near engine or exhaust.

Where do you think the see through one would benefit most? Before the carb or after the tank?

I use the see through plastic filters front and rear. Frankly installing it in the engine bay made me a bit nervous but that was all in my head. Leaks do happen -- most often in the connection points. And if the plastic had been black I wouldn't have hesitated a blink.

On my carbed `77 the filter is no where near the motor itself and on the opposite side from the exhaust.
