Where can I find this throttle linkage??

It looks like I do have what orford2004 pictured, but no linkage beyond that. So, will a later model pedal still have the same place the cable comes out of or will it have to come out somewhere else, and what does the pedal have to do with the mechanism that comes out of the firewall?

Sorry, John, what you have is a jerry-rigged homemade setup that looks dangerous as hell. The PO spliced into the hand throttle cable and fabricated the U-shaped bracket in your photos. I strongly recommend you scrap this arrangement, as that tangle of wires can bind.

In your third photo, you can see the hole (below the homemade bracket) where the original linkage fits. Remember that there are two nylon bushings, one on each end of orford's bottom photo. These often wear away, making the linkage even sloppier than when new.

To answer your other question, the firewall exit point for linkages is identical for all carb model Spiders. The FI engines (which use the cam box-mounted bellcrank we discussed earlier) have the exit on the left side of the firewall, below the brake reservoir.

Shown below are the photos of my '73. The universal cable is mounted through a hole in the firewall, and then attached to what I believe to be the stock pedal assembly inside the passenger compartment. The cable then screws into the cam cover mounted bracket.







As I mentioned before, this setup works great, and I would recommend it over any type of solid linkage.

Newell33, Thanks for the pics. Does this linkage require replacing the pedal assembly too?

I'm all for tearing it all out and replacing it with the correct things, but could use some advice as I go down that road. Where did you get that cable system?

Also, nice air filter, where did you land that thing?

I'm not certain on the pedal, as I purchased the car with a similar cable setup. All I did was replace the Mr. Gasket brand cable with a better Lokar brand cable (better bracket mounting method). If I remember correctly, somone mentioned that the pedal assemblies are all the same. It's really tough to see up inside the footwell area, so I had to loosen the two bolts that hold the throttle pedal assembly in place. I then pulled the rod that attaches to the cable down to get a better look at it. The cable end just slips down through a slot in the rod. Once I slipped the new cable in place I bolted the pedal assembly back to the inside of the firewall. Getting the cable nut tightened wasn't too fun, either, as there just isn't much room up in there.

As noted in my earlier post, the car had a Mr. Gasket cable installed. I think most O'Reilly stores are carrying this cable on their performace planograms now. I believe Spectre makes a similar cable too. I re-used the cable end that attaches to the stud on the cam cover bracket (attaches with a set screw). I then purchased a universal 24 inch Lokar cable from eBay. The Lokar cable had a ball stud on the end, so the end that attaches with the set screw wouldn't have worked with my cam cover bracket. Essentially, I've used two cables to make this work (not sure if a single, correct cable is available).

The air plenum /cleaner assembly is made by Spectre. I picked it up from eBay quite a while back, but I believe it's available new through Spectre distributors. K and N also makes one that serves a similar purpose. Since I'm using a Weber / Interco 34/34 carburetor, and the Spectre unit is designed to fit a standard 5 1/8th inch carburetor, I had to have a co-worker machine an adapter for me to get it to work.
