Transmission on the roll - 1st

Folks, basic question about 1st gear on our cars. 5 speed 82'. If I fully stop at a stop sign and do not wait a full three seconds before shifting into first It feel like i can feel the shaft spin as I engage 1st with a slight rumble going over gear teeth. Clutch is all the way in and the car shifts through all gears very well. No problem ever putting it in 1st from a red light when sitting more than a few seconds. I have a few thoughts on this but I will admit i am not a transmission expert. clutch is adjusted well with appropriate amount of freeplay to engagement.

Are the symptoms any different between when the transmission is cold and when it has warmed up? Basically, with the clutch engaged the input shaft is turning at 800rpm, when you depress the clutch to put it in gear the synchro has to bring that to zero before the gears mesh. If the synchro is a bit tired, it may not be up to the task. You could try changing your gear oil and see if that gives your synchro any relief.

I'll check it out this weekend. I'm going to bring my little FIAT to sit among the Ferrari's and Lambo's at a fund raising event during Sunday's Italian Formula One Grand Prix. You have to love Monza! I'm thinking it actually shifts better when warm. I have less than 4000 miles since changing the trans oil - GL1 non EP.
