Gulp Valve

Post by redspider8066 »

I have a 1980 2000and i have replaced the gulp valve and connected all of the vacuum hoses. The car starts right up then dies. It will not idle. If i remove and block up the large port of the gulp valve the car will idle but it takes a while to get it started. Any suggestions?

The first thing I would ask you is "What is a gulp valve?

I have never seen a diagram with the item labeled "gulp valve" ! "Gulp Valves" are, what we would say at Datsun, a class of BCDD's, Boost Control Decelleration Devices. They take a big "gulp" of air when you let off the gas.

Redspider, Are you in a state/provence that requires an emissions inspection? If not, remove the gulp valve and all the associated lines and block off the vaccum ports. I too have an '80 carbed car and that's what I did. Runs great and less crap under the hood.

Gulp valve is there for a reason. It takes no horsepower, uses no gas. Helps with smoother shifts, help prevent backfires, help prevent cylinders being washed down with fuel on decell. No reason to yank it.

But in my case, all those prettty multi-colored plastic vacuum lines were cracked and broken.

WYspider, I didn't remove the EGR thing form the manifold, I just plugged the vacuum line fitting on the top of it.
