I quit years ago, my Spider smokes like a chimney!

Hi,

So, I don't know if it's a recent manifestation or if the wind's been in my favor all along, but my '78 Spider emits quite the bolus of blue smoke when I come to a stop after a several miles of uninterrupted motoring.

It seems to leave a similarly undesirable knot of blue smoke behind when starting off again after such stops.

I'm guessing it really smokes all the time, but I'm not driving it again until I get the coolant leak* repaired.

And this is a symptom of… ?

Could be a leaking valve seal (really leaking) but more likely you have a ring failure. Check the compression, do a leakdown test if it is low to determine if it is coming from the top or the bottom end.

What oil do you have in it.
Changing oil to 15W40 and a can of "restore" eliminated the smoke that emitted from my car when I bought it earlier this summer.

Hi Geoff,

I'll give that a try, I think Valvolene have a high mileage formulation as well. What exactly do you mean by "restore"?

Restore is an engine additive product http://www.restoreusa.com
I used rotella and the restore based on advice from a mechanic who is into restoring old cars.
So far so good for me, of course your results may be different.

Amazing stuff, it's still in the can and the smoking's stopped!

...Oil change with Rotella 15W40 per your advice seems to have done the trick, don't see any need to adding the additive.
