I have a '74 Spider that I have owned for years, it has been siiting in the garage waiting for a restoration for quite some time. Recently I picked up an '80 Spider 2000 to use for parts. The body is pretty much useless but the rest has potential, even a working clock. I intend to pop the 2000 motor into the '74 body. But will have lots of questions to put in here before I am done. I worked for a FIAT dealership in Montreal, Quebec back in the early '70's and grew to love the Spiders then.  I now live in Drayton Valley, Alberta ( Oil Capital of Canada)

welcome, we'll be anxious to see your progress on the restoration. Are you planning on changing the front x-member also to lower the 2L in the chassis?

Kim,

Welcome to the site, looking forward to some pictures. Not sure if you knew but Edmonton has a great resource in the graet folks at Ital Motors. See http://www.italmotors.ca/ . They have lots of stock and are very knowledgeable when it comes to the restoration of Fiat Spiders.
Have a great time restoring and transplanting the motor!

Mark- I was planning on taking all the engine mounts and supports from the 2000 and install that on the '74. What about the rad? I was noticing the difference in size. Can I use the older 1800 rad or is that enough cooling volume?
Carl- I have dealt with Fred at Ital Motors before he was very helpful, thanks for the input.

I do intend to put some pictures on after I get a bit more progress made.

if you don't change the crossmember, you may have hood clearance issues. The mounts are the same between years, and the 2L motor is taller. The late rads are wider, but your early rad should be adequate for cooling

I am planning on using the '80 hood just to make sure there are no clearance problems. Thanks Kim

not that i am an expert, but i have read many posts with great interest over the years that tend to suggest you will need to lower the two litre in the engine bay by using the two litre x-member...else the engine sits up too high for an unmodified hood to properly close and latch.

just using the two litre hood does not appear to be enough clearance.

Hello fellow Montrealer. I am in the west islnad. I have a 1980 spider with what appears to be a 1975 engine it her. Post some pics when you have a chance.

Dan,

Thanks for the compliment on the picture. I was out on a very public street and had fun taking it with lots of people stopping to see the car while trying to take the pics. Not sure if you can see it but I had to put masking tape on the front side marker to cut down on the reflection from the flash. This was just another great sunset from the 'land of the living skies'

I'll get to some pictures once I get past the teardown stage and into the rebuild. I lived in Beaconsfield for many years when I was younger, worked at Kirkland Auto which was a FIAT dealership as a parts Gofor. That was where I decided that the Spider was the car for me. Took a while to get there, about 15 years, but slow progress is still progress.

Oh, don't wait to start taking pictures. You will want some "before" pictures yourself, as well as some tear down pictures.

and, once you have those, please share them with us. We love to hear progress reports in living color.

Finally got around to getting a couple of pictures of my parts cars under Flickr, as red2neckz. These are just a couple of shots of my '80 Spider 2000 parts car. I'll post some of the '74 when I dig them out. :)
