Got the EMPI Carb installed - Wow!

Post by DougC »

Finally got around to installing the new carb. I couldn't get to a couple of the bolts on the manifold, so I decided I'll take it to the shop sometime and swap that out. BUT, I went ahead and put the carb on the old manifold and plugged everything I didn't yank out.

Here's all the stuff I pulled out:

If you see anything I need in there, please let me know!

Anyway it runs SOOOO much better now, I feel like I might even be able to pass someone on the road! Here's a quick shot of the linkage and air cleaner:

the improvement is pretty shocking on a 79/80 isn't it?

I really like the boost the 32/36 made to my 1980. Night and day difference.

Does using an 1800 intake or 4-2-1 exhaust make that much difference over just adding an 32/36 to a stock 1979/80 motor?

I want to do this, but Colorado sucks with the emission inspections. I'm not sure it'd pass the sniffer with the EMPI on it, nevermind the missing "emissions equipment".

When I replaced my carb, I kept the original air filter. It looks stock. And the emissions went down.

My 79 passed emissions sniffer test here in Portland (Fairly tough laws) with the Empi.

Did you have to rejet? I have the exact same setup with an 1800 manifold, and had to rejet (and still working on it.)

Did you use a spacer? There's no way mine was going to fit, but I got a spacer from Mark on eBay.

When you swap manifolds, if the one you use needs a plug for the coolant passageway in the center, be sure to use teflon tape on the threads. Creates an annoying leak if you don't, and it is a bugger to get the carb back off to remove the plug.
