1980 Carb Replacement

Post by parsok »

Gents;

I've seen the threads regarding carb replacement on a 1980 carb but as a newby to Fiat i just wanted to make sure I have it right, or not. I see the two main recommendations are a 32/36 DFEV and a 34 ADF. I want to replace the existing intake and exhaust mainfolds with a 1800 and 42-1 respectively. Considering I'm relatively new at this, which carb is easier to install? Many thanks in advance.

I went with a 32/36 DFEV Weber and 1800 intake, easy swap and this is coming from a total newbie at the time. That was 2 years ago!

The 34 is almost a straight swap but nearly twice as much $$ as the 32/36 for about the same performance. The 32/36 requires some linkage modification but it's minor from what I've read and you will have to loop the water choke hoses together but that's minor also.

Another quick question. Will a '73 4-2-1 exhaust manifold fit on the 1980 carb engine without any modification?

Allison Automotive's link for the Empi is here: $255

If you want a Weber 32/36 DFEV best price I've seen is Weber Direct: $199..95

Hi,

That's certainly a puzzling paradox...

Has anyone held them both in their hands at the same time?

Mark, what's the sales pitch here?

Thanks,
Mark

This is a significant price drop on the Weber Direct page. I am assuming they are clearing them out but this is pure speculation.

Is this a typo on the Weber site? That's less than half the price others sell these for. I just bought the Empi from Mark and plan to use it, but wow.

Just tried an "add to cart" and it came in at $199.95 so I think it is legit. The other 32/36 are discounted as well as the 34s.

I'm seeing the Weber at a high of $350, including the usual air cleaner and some VW specific pieces, and the EMPI at $215.
(google "weber 32/36 dfev", "32/36 DFEV")

Still wondering if there's any functional superiority of the Weber over the EMPI.

Thanks,
Mark

Weber used to be made in Italy, now made in Spain. The other brand is made in China.

A Spider 2000, especially a CS2 (non-injected) will benefit most from swapping the head, manifold, carburetor, and possibly exhaust. Ask anyone who has tried it, you'll regain 20-25 HP and retain the reliability of stock parts.

1800cc or 1592cc or 2000cc (Fuel Injection) Head
1800cc intake manifold
4-2-1 exhaust from 2000cc Spider (carb or FI will work so long as it is the 4-2-1)
34ADF, DFEV, or 36ADL carburetor

Next to this you should, at a minimum, replace the intake manifold and carburetor. You'll use the 1800cc manifold as described above and one of those carbs. A nice increase but maintains that goofy 2000 carb head with the squished #1 compression chambers, risers, and EGR port.
