Low oil pressure

Post by Italchic »

I just aquired a 71 124 Spider. The oil pressure gauge registers a low pressure. I usually have to tap the gauge to get it to show any pressure at all. I'm wondering it the problem is in the gauge, the oil pump, or some other area. The previous owner said that the oil and filter haven't been changed for some time. Fresh oil and a new filter will be my first step. Any other thoughts?

low readings are pretty common with the stock gauges, many owners install mechanical gauges for an accurate reading

So its possible that the pressure is OK? How would I know for sure, and can I drive it with the gauge showing a low pressure?

On my 72 I have to flick the gauge with my fingernail every now and then to get it unstuck :)
How low is low?? If it is reading halfway at road speed and coming up at all at idle it is fine.
Certainly change your oil. Use 15w-40, and/or search the site for oil recomendations.
If you do a mechanical gauge do not use a plastic line, get a copper line.
Probably nothing wrong.
