When should the fan kick on?

Post by KalamazooJohnny »

Where on the temp gage should the needle be when the fan kicks on? I bypassed the thermo switch in the bottom of the radiator and it turned the fan on, but I replaced the switch anyway and hooked it back up properly. I just took it for a 3 1/2 mile drive (the furthest yet) and it was not in the red yet, but it was smelling warm. Hoping its just the years of sitting in storage burning off that I smell, but I am not sure when I should be concerned if it doesn't kick on automatically.

The fan won't kick on while you are moving/driving. Does the temp gauge work? Just let is sit still until it comes on and note the temperature. As Mark said should come on about 190

The gage seems to work, but so far it only goes just to the 0 in 190 and the fan has not kicked on. Why would it not turn on while driving? That doesn't make sense to me. Its the temperature of the coolant that makes the switch right? Why would it matter if the car is driving or not? Should I push it hard and try to get it into the red to see if the fan kicks on?
