EMPI carb upgrade for my '79 Fiat Spider

Post by DougC »

Ok,

I bought the new carb and all of the required accessories and will be taking this on (thanks Mark!). My question is, how much additional value is there to swapping out the intake manifold with an 1800 manifold? It seems like not too much extra work, but these manifolds are somewhat hard to locate.

Thanks,

Doug

I think it has been pretty well documented that the 1800 intake is superior to the 2l. They are relatively inexpensive and clean up a lot of useless emission junk from your engine. Now would be a good time to make the switch.

Another 79 owner waiting for more responses... Just wondering if plugging the 2L ports and installing the upgraded carb will give a decent performance upgrade especially if removing other emissions stuff? It is hard to locate the 1800 manifold when all you need to do is order a carb!

Did you try forum member fiat124fl? He's parting out 10 spiders he may have one. Also try the parts wanted someone may have one.
Midwest bayless has reconditioned ones. A little pricy but at least they are clean and ready to go.

Yes just swapping the carbs will give a boost however the 2l intake is port matched for the 28/32 carb. It has a smaller primary intake port so you will be restricting flow on the primary of your new larger carb. The 1800 intake just has one big intake hole. It is a much better intake for your new toy.

Change the manifold, the 79 piece is a worthless boat anchor.

for those owners in California that still need to undergo smog checks, the simple carb swap does provide a noticeable performance increase without changing intakes

Good call, Mark is right about Californians being stuck with it but you don't have to, might as well get 100% of the benefit of a bigger carb. You will love it. PB
