1979 Idle Solenoid

Post by Carsonh2 »

Having problems with my 1979 2000 all stock but with an electric fuel pump. After looking around the forum I think my idle solenoid could be the culprit. It passes the click test and I pulled and cleaned the jet but still no joy. If if turn the solenoid CCW about a quarter turn from full in it will idle at about 1500,all the way in it will start and as rpms come down it quits. Any ideas? Replacements for the solenoid? Thanks!

I've been told by competent fiatsi that this solenoid rarely goes bad, but that there are often ground issues and electrical issues that may plague lots of things in the system. You say it clocks, but is that only when you hot-wire it?

Check the tip of the jet. It should be perfectly conical. I've seen one that was worn on one side and did not interface well with the sealing surface inside the carb body.

Has the carb ever been rebuilt? You may want to try and blow out the idle circuit with compressed air. Watch your eyes.

It will run at 1500+ RPM If the solenoid has failed or the idle orifice is clogged.

Remove the solenoid and spray carb cleaner (using the tube it comes with) directly into the orifice. Watch inside the carb, the cleaner should spray into the barrel. This will also clean it out. Do the same for the secondary idle jet.

If it was clogged then the carb probably needs a good overall cleaning. Remove the float bowl (plan to replace the gasket) and look for rust in the bowl. If so you'll need to clean it out and get a better fuel filter, maybe clean your tank out.
