carbon soot out the exhaust

Post by cjc »

Hello All-

I'm a newbie with a newly purchased 81 Spider.... I noticed a good amount of black soot on the garage floor coming from the exhaust. Any thoughts. I'm thinking step one is to replace the air filter?

Thanks

After a while the soot always builds up in the exhaust. Try to put the car in a good spot and rev it up to blow it out. It will make a mess.

Hello and welcome! I am speaking for myself when I say that these cars run rich. That's not a bad thing, just black dribbles, droplets and such on the garage floor and driveway. I think it's a great idea to change the air filter and do a little extra housekeeping while your there. This forum is a good place to get the low down on a lot of maintenance need for our "little friends".

I always have a laundry list of things to do. This car is a blast to work on so don't be shy.

If you make a lot of short trips, your exhaust might not get hot enough to get rid of the moisture it accumulates. Next time you start it, the water comes out the pipe with all the dirt in it.

Solution: Take longer trips in your Fiat.
