Poll:Who trusts JB WELD on a Cracked Oil Pump pickup

Post by italisti »

Okay, so the last few days I have been on a mission to remedy my dented oil pan.
I have seen that a few people on here have had experience with this and the biggest question of mine is Why didn't they just make the oil pan aluminum like the Alfa Romeos? I guess FIATs were much more moderate in price compared to others of that era.. but still.. its all Italian quality right? Mama mia!

Anyway... My problem is this... as many know, when the pan gets a nice sized dent, the oil pump most likely takes an internal beating that NEEDS attention.

I thought I was out of the water after I took off the pan and inspected the pickup-screen and tube part of the oil pump... should have taken off my sunglasses...California sun! So bright here I even have to wear sunglasses when I'm workin under the car!
So I hoisted up the engine again, got my clean, reshaped and freshly painted oil pan ready to slide into position, when what did I see? A hairline crack about 1.5 inches up the backside of the pickup part of the oil sump. ..

So I am thinking NIICE now either I have to go beggin some machine shop to go easy on me to do some minor welding job, or its another $100 and about a week to wait on a new pump..
So I did what most people with nothin but a few fresh tubs of JB-Weld in my favor.. I cleaned up the oil pump and threw some heafty globs of grey paste over the fracture!

Now I am having regrets because I am thinking.. man I am sure that would take care of the problem for a little while but what happens over time when the heat and metal contracts and expands more and more overtime?? Will all that stuff just drop off into my oil pan? Possibly make more problems in the long run?

There in lies the question... Should I trust the JB Weld or just wave the white flag and order the stupid pump?

I would order the pump , JB Weld i know its strong but on a part like this i would say your taking a
big gamble hoping this will be ok but ask yourself this for how long ? sooner or later your going to end up
pulling that oil pan back off or worst yet pulling the whole engine out to rebuild, fix a crank because you
spun a bearing etc .

If you cannot find a new oil pump, go to someone who can weld your old pickup. The issue being any small imperfection of the weld will allow air to be sucked in, and destroy your bearings. A competent welder should not have any problem repairing your pick up. Personally I would recommend just replacing the pump. jb weld scares me!

I have a old one for my 2.0L. i just change it because the engine is rebuilt and she was on the upper limits of the tolerance.
I can mail it to you from Vermont next friday if you want.

I wouldn't use it. JB weld has almost no strength when under pressure. It is fine to fill a crack or something like that. Really if you use the stuff you've committed to (a) the part being junk anyway and (b) there is no sane alternative.

You have plenty of good alternatives; your oil pump is critical. You think you've had a bad week, wait until that JB busts up and your motor sucks up a glob a rock-hard epoxy. K-runch.
