AFM REPAIR

Post by ORFORD2004 »

If you have issue with the AFM, misfire and backfire, you can spray WD-40 on the rheostat under the cover of the AFM.
It just solved all my problems.

The track does need to be cleaned periodically. I'd be interested how it behaves after a period of time with the WD40 on it. What doesn't evaporate will leave a film which could hold dust which will act as an abrasive. Even with the cap on dust makes it's way under it. May not be an issue though for many miles. I clean mine and used this method to adjust the sweep arm; http://the944.com/afm.htm
Let us know how it hold up, I may be concerned over a non-issue.

You can also use an electronics cleaner that evaporates; the issue with WD-40 or any lubricant is that it will eventually gum up any moving parts.

The trick came from a friend who run a music studio. He said that's the best for a smooth operation of the slider.

Just beware the side effects. A music studio isn't exposed to 180 degree heat, exhaust fumes, carbon, and dirt during its normal course of operation. Electronics cleaner on the rheostat and maybe a drop - a tiny drop - of dielectric grease on the swing assembly would have the same effect with the downside of WD-40 on your electronics.
