Carb misses if I rev the throttle too fast?
Carb misses if I rev the throttle too fast?
I noticed that my engine has a slight miss if the throttle is pressed too fast. Any ideas to fix it. Otherwise it idles great but if your at a stop light sometimes when you try to accelerate it misses for a split second but doesn't stall out. Car is a '79 automatic with 1800 manifold 32/36 dfev.

Search around for accelerator pump and carb rebuilds.
Usually that miss is a bad accelerator pump not squirting enough fuel in as the throttle blades open. Look down the carb and work the throttle quickly with your hand and see if you see gas squirt out or not.
Tim.

The carb is only about 2 years old, hasn't seen a lot of driving time, could a accelerator pump go that fast?TronDD wrote:Search around for accelerator pump and carb rebuilds.

the diaphragm could fail in that time, but I've seen the 32/36 pump nozzle is a little undersized for a 2L. You may need to change the nozzle to one with a larger jet or ream yours out

Will check into that. Thanks Mark.So Cal Mark wrote:the diaphragm could fail in that time, but I've seen the 32/36 pump nozzle is a little undersized for a 2L. You may need to change the nozzle to one with a larger jet or ream yours out

Re: Carb misses if I rev the throttle too fast?
Is it backfiring/spitting out the carb? I had problems for a while with mu carb spitting back or backfiring if I gave it too quick of a throttle movement off the line. Ended up being the timing/points gap. Wouldn't hurt to double check timing
Re: Carb misses if I rev the throttle too fast?
Not sure but when I have my alignment done I'll ask my mechanic to check the timing, I've learned a lot about working on cars since buying this fiat but still haven't learned to use a timing gun.boogiedude wrote:Is it backfiring/spitting out the carb? I don't know what a carb miss is. Explain how you know this is a carb issue and not a timing or spark issue.

Not sure if its the carb, just telling what symptoms I noticed.Danno wrote:I don't know what a carb miss is. Explain how you know this is a carb issue and not a timing or spark issue.
