Fuel Hose.

Post by Kabong »

I have looked through my shop manual and the interweb for the part name/price of this hose/assembly, I can find it. It appears to be connected to (or is part of) the injector manifold. I have a small blister and pinhole leaking fluid. Any ideas where a guy could find a replacement? ('80 FI)

Thanks

Looks like a brake line to me and I don't think I have ever seen that in one of the two Fi's I had so maybe that is not original.
Maybe one of the fo's was inventive here, where does it go?

It's in my shop manual, it's the fuel supply line. Problem is, it appears to be connected with a custom crimped hose.

Ok, I just took a look at my car and I don't know why I did not remember (getting old) but it looks the same. The hose seems to be crimped or vulcanized to the fuel rail. They don't seem to have a replacement at IAP so maybe a used fuel rail could help.

I have an 81 & 82 spiders with FI and that is indeed the fuel supply hoses for the feul rail. Please do not run it with it leaking fuel. I think that is a hose maker here locally that can make one up.

Hey Redcars, I see you own a Super 7, what brand is it? I always dreamed of having/building one. Is it much more fun to drive than a Spider?

It is an RM8, a very little know maker that was sued out of existence. A few of the kits made it to the States. I built mine for Auto-X compotision and it is not streetable. 1400 pounds with driver and 155 hp at the wheels.

You might have to take the rail off to repair. The end on the rail can be cut off with a box cutter and a new hose will fit over the barb'd end. Use a proper fuel line clamp, not the screw type hose clamps to secure that end.
The metal end that screws into the metal fuel line can again be cut and the new fuel line put over the barb'd end, clamp and good to go.

I agree this hose would be very hard to chance in the car. I would remove rail from the car and then cut the hose off the rail and at the fitting that connects the hose to the fuel line going to the fuel filter in the back of the car. I use a Dremal tool with a small bit to slice the hose off the barbs it is pushed on. Sometime it is a little difficult to get the old hose off. Others use a utility knife. Try not to damage the barbs.
I am pretty sure IAP and other parts suppliers sell this hose by the foot. You might call them.
I use a hose from Mcmaster Caar PN 5645k23 and usually make it a bout 6" longer than the stock hose. That makes it easier to connect in to rigid fuel line.
I use a hot air gun to heat the hose end before pushing it onto the barb.

Hope this is some help

Been there, done that, no problems. I just bought an appropriate length of 5/16" ID EFI fuel hose off the roll at my local auto parts dealer, undid the clamp at the fuel manifold and slit/cut off the old hose. Unscrewed other end from steel pipe connecting back to tank. Refit the screw on fitting to new hose, fed clamps on and refitted to fuel rail then screw fitting to supply line.I used new stainless screw type clamps, crimp types are cheaper but access is very tight to crimp.

To take out the fuel rail, you need to pull the injectors all as one assembly and I can assure you, you do not want to be trying to refit them with the engine in the car. On the bench fine, in the car - you will invent new swear words!

Only words of warning - you will spill a small amount of fuel so put a plastic bag or such over starter motor, AND that battery lead to the starter IS LIVE ALWAYS with or without keys so pull the battery terminal FIRST.

Fuel line cost me about $4 clamps about $5 If hose seems too tight to fit over barbs, try a TINY smear of liquid soap applied to barbs (not to inside of hose) as lubricant.

I had a true Lotus Super 7 many years ago. Totally different to a spider. Imagine driving your spider on the hiway, top down, naked in winter and no heater. Thats the 7 experience in a padded jacket.
They are brutal, no comforts, no protection, you are totally vulnerable in traffic but they go like the clappers and scare the crap out of your passenger.
They are very poor aerodynamicly, the clutch is either in or out NOTHING in between so you have to just go! Pulling out and passing another car at say 60Mph, your exposure time is about 2.5 seconds if you plonk it, but they get a bit scarey and feel unstable over about 90mph (due to aerodynamics).
There was a tuned one for sale in UK many years back, claimed 0-60mph in 4.5 seconds
