I thought it was about time I gave back a little something. I haven't found any clear answers or tips on here or the other Fiat sites about how to *remove* the control arm bushings. I tried some of the methods hinted at in other threads before this idea came to me. I didn't want to cut the bushings out, it seemed like there must be a more elegant way.
(Disclaimer, I am in no way responsible if you poke an eye out or hurt yourself using this idea. There could potentially be a LOT of force on the materials involved, and something definitely could break or shatter.)
For around $12 at your local hardware store (But probably not Home Depot or Lowes, as a few of these items I could only find at Ace) you can build a set of tools that will remove the bushings with ease, quickly, with no heat, no penetrating oil, and no blades.
The first tool only costs about $3, and is made from a 1/2" nut and bolt, and a unthreaded PVC 'cap' and a washer. You need to drill a hole in the center 'cap' to accept the bolt. Position as shown, and use it to pull the inner rubber part of the bushing out.
Shown with the rubber bit still attached:
The second tool is a male-male bit of threaded steel\iron pipe (the only thing thin enough) a threaded reducer, and then a threaded reducing 'cap' that has a hole already in it. No drilling required on this one, just assemble it as shown. DEFINITELY use grade 8 or better hardware for this. I would also suggest NOT using a rattle gun. I stripped out my bolt the moment I put my rattle gun on it. At the back side, where the nut is, you will need an appropriate sized metric washer. The size is around 30mm. I just picked up an assortment from the hardware store (Again, grade 8 or better) and used what fit. The washer will probably bend at some point during your project, so best to have a few of them handy.
You definitely could change around the design of this to suit what you can find. I just chose what would get me the cheapest possible tool without doing any metal-drilling.
If your upper control arms are undamaged, using this method, I see NO reason to shell out the coin for brand new UPPER control arms. With the above technique\info, even with grinding off the rivets for the ball joints, it will take you about 15 minutes start to finish to rebuild each control arm!
The 'pop' sound the bushing makes when it comes out is very satisfying by the way.

Re: How to remove control arm bushings with home made tool
nice solution. i have used a similar approach using c-clamps and sockets. your design doesnt require 5 hands like my method. thanks for sharing.
Re: How to remove control arm bushings with home made tool
I tried c-clamps and sockets at first, but didn't have any sockets that were both the right size and thin-walled enough.
I think the best alternative I found is taking the inner rubber bit out, then taking a hack-saw apart and putting the blade inside, and slicing a slit the length of the metal outer bushing. Then just knock it out with hammer\chisel. I am pretty sure my method is less effort and quicker, even if it does cost a few bucks to make the tool.

If you have an air chisel it is easy to blast them right out.
Re: How to remove control arm bushings with home made tool
Air chisel also requires you have a big enough compressor to run one.
I don't have either item.

Since everyone is so full of helpful alternatives... What is the best method for the lowers?
If it is an air chisel, I guess it is about time I upgraded my compressor. :

Well my compressor is just a small roll around version, It runs the chisel just fine, just not for terribly long, but a few short bursts is all you usually need. PB
Re: How to remove control arm bushings with home made tool
I only had a 1/3hp 3 gallon. I upgraded to a 2.5 10 gallon, which is good, because I have other air tools around that I bought and never had the ability to use...
Anyway, can you advise HOW to use the air chisel? I can't get them to budge even the tiniest fraction. All I can make happen is chiseling\pounding away at the metal until it cuts about 1/2 way down the bushing. Is the idea to mangle them out of there or 'knock' them out? Do you somehow get the rubber out first? I am at a loss. I was really hoping, after the money I spent, I'd come home and it would knock them right out, but I've made 0 progress after an hour of messing around!!!

Re: How to remove control arm bushings with home made tool
Finally figured out what works after burning and sawing one out...
The trick seems to be to work from the outside first; chiseling between the arm and the bushing flange. Once it starts to get loosened, I used a combination of cutting a 'slit' down the side, hammering, and cold chiseling, in addition to the air chisel.
Definitely not easy, but I did manage to get them all out!
In hindsight, I should have rebuild the uppers and bought brand new lowers. Just too much work, even with the right tools. Oh well.

You got it figured out-I hammer the center and outer, as soon as you have a bit of space btwn the collar and arm, slip the chisel in there and pry a bit. I hit them with PB blaster to get thing loosened up, never had it take an hour. If they don't pop the cutting of the outer collar and chiseling it in to crush it works. Sorry to hear you struggled, maybe next time I will video the technique. PB
