Transmission- as long as I've got it open

Post by eddy314 »

I've removed my trans to repair 3rd gear crunching. It appears that I need to replace the 3rd gear synchro, synchro spring, and possibly 3rd gear itself, and also possibly the slider, but I won't know till I take it all apart and inspect it.

Question: As long as I went to the trouble of removing the trans and have it open - (I certainly don't want to have to do it again any time soon) What other parts should I consider replacing? All other gears operate fine, I just had a problem with 3rd.

Replace all the syncros. Inspect the sliders and the gears very closely, and replace as needed. Do any of the other gears tend to grind on you? If yes, they're probably worn some. Do the bearings make any noise? If yes, it may be a good time to replace them. Clean them all up real well and look for any signs of galling, pitting, or rumble feel to them when rotating them under a load. Look for wear on the Forks and replace as necessary.

Mark, the trans shifted good untill one occurance, then it did not. If it was the syncros, I would think it would have been acting up for awhile. All the teeth looked good, that leaves the shifter forks, or broken syncro spring. If you need anything, load her up, and bring her over!
