I've been taking my time cleaning up most of the parts and making them like new. You should get a small parts cleaner from harbor freight to clean your tools and such. I just usually wipe them off after using. I do have a parts cleaner. I haven't used it yet. It just sits there next to my motorcycle which sit there too. I have about 25 lbs of hardware that need cleaned. I'm going to try a tumbler to clean them. I may use acid etch to coat them so they don't just rust right back up. I've noticed if you paint a bolt or nut, if it isn't cured all the way. It definitely will chip. If you use the acid, don't plan on painting them. It probably won't stick. The acid leaves a waxy substance on it which has to be washed thoroughly or it will peel. You don't want to leave the acid on without wiping it off. It can weaken the metal. Things I want to look shiny, I use my wire wheel and polish them. Then paint with clear.
I'm just rambling away.

I've had good luck soaking rusty hardware in POR15 metal ready. The solution can be reused many times and leaves a corrosion resistant, paintable coating,(zinc phosphate I think). Bead blasting in a mesh basket works too. I tried a vibratory tumbler, but wasn't Impressed and gave it to my friend that reloads.

That's what the acid etch leaves behind. A Zinc Phosphate coating.

I'm working on organizing everything so I know where everything is. I found all the missing bolts and things. I have to clean them up now.
so, this made me think of something I've always struggled with, and maybe I can get some hints?
Every time I've put together a really quality project, the hardware has become an issue. I mean the nuts-n-bolts.... etc. Assembling a nice fresh motor (or anything else) with grungy hardware sucks. It detracts from the finished product. And yet the cleaning of each little screw and nut and bolt and pin and (you get the idea) is so TEDIOUS! And then I put my socket on it, which has 12 years of built-up grime down in the well anyway, transdferring immediately to the freshly-cleaned (sometimes painted) surface.... :|
With motorcycles, it was a no-brainer to replace all the bolts. But there's just too many on a car.

WHAT"S YOUR SECRET?
I bought a tumbler and zinc plating kit from Eastwood to handle the hardware issue. After dealing with the time and effort involved to tumble the parts, wire brush what the tumbler missed and then the zinc plating process, I decided it was worth the cost to just buy new. I ended up becoming best friends with my local Ace Hardware Store! I would hate to see what I spent on just nuts, bolts and washers during my restoration!

I made little square holes to fit the plastic plate holders. I am using the LED's in the bolts that hold the plate on. :P

Finally finished with the first front spoiler. Mine will be done hopefully by Monday.
Making them as an overlay took me two weeks for two. I have to fix the mold if I'm going to make anymore.
