Tranny and Engine Swap

Post by dsnyder »

My 1978 Spider Tranny is whining and popping out of gear so the time seems to have come.

I have a 1982 Spider 2000 with a transmisison of unknown quality.

1st... are the 78 tranny and the 82 tranny the same?

2nd...I have a Lancia 2000cc motor that supposedly is the same as our Fiat motors. It was completely rebuilt and never installed. It is not wrapped up or anything so some dust could have gotten in an maybe a little moisture. Do I take it apart? Also, is the Lancia the same as the Fiat 200?

3rd... If I am removing the transmission, and maybe the engine is it easier to take the two out together or separate?

4th... Anyway to tell the status of the 1982 tranny once I have it out of the donor car. Donor does not run.

5th... I've heard the 82 diff has a different gear ratio- one more desirable for what I'm trying to accomplish. Will that diff fit with my axels? I just did the rear wheel bearings.

The Lancia engine is not the same as the Fiats, the block is a different cast, there are no provisions for the side motor mounts on it.
'79 and up fiats have a 3.90 rear axle ratio, your '78 is a 4.30 I believe, you could just swap rear ends.
The transmission will bolt right up between the late model and your '78. They are pretty simple to repair / rebuild, if you want to do it yourself. You will not really be able to tell the condition of the '82 transmission without visual internal inspection, since you cannot test it under power.
I find it easier to pull both units together.

So you think it is possible for me to go in and repair the transmission myself? Are special tools required?

If you can overhaul an engine, you can fix the transmission. You didn't say which gear it pops out of, 4th?
No special tools are really required, a puller comes in handy for a step or two. You can find the trans manual online, probably from someone here too, the exploded view helps. You may be able to just replace the needed gear and syncro, if the bearings are ok. The transmission on one of mine kept popping out of 1st under load, and it only needed the gear and syncro, and the sleeve, it had no bearing noise other than the normal whine. But while you have it down and apart, you may as inspect all the parts, and replace what you think is suspect. New seals while your there to, the gasket / seal kit is cheap.
Personally I think the transmission on my riding lawn mower is more complicated than a standard on an automobile.

It pops out of 3rd.

It broke down and the way home yesterday. I'm really suspecting the throwout bearing as I now can't get the clutch to disengage. I shut off the ignition, put it in 2nd and started it (starter making the car roll) and drove home with no clutch. I'm thinking the whining could have been coming from the throwout bearing.

That still doesn't change the popping out of 3rd so I need to fix the tranny while it is out.

Thoughts?

popping out of gear is generally a result of worn forks. (riding the gearshift knob is a no-no). if the throwout bearing is jammed, it is usually preceeded by weeks of noise. may be your cable. classic to break at the top of the clutch pedal.

Yep, check the shift forks and the sleeve also, like azruss said. Also, the area where the clutch cable goes thru the firewall can sometimes crack and distort or break. I have a Lancia in the shop right now that the throwout bearing went out in, and it was noisy for a while before going out, although it was more of a growl than a whine.
