Quick question on timing belt

Post by donm »

Is it necessary to remove the crank pulley to replace the timing belt? I"m finding conflicting information.

Nope, if you have already have the pita shrouds removed. If the shrouds are still there they have to come off to swap the belt. Then the crank has to come off as there is one 10mm bolt behind the crank that holds the lower shield in place.
If the shrouds are removed already,on the passenger side you'll notice the timing pointer. The one 10 mm bolt should be removed (the other is a pressed in bolt)then the pointer can be swung up a tad allowing the belt to fit through over the crank wheel.

Is there any consensus about whether one should remove both upper and lower covers permanently? I can see the "PITA" quotient on the lower one; does having the upper one off give much benefit vs. whatever you get from keeping it on?

Hmmm..... anyone that has taken their shrouds off and replaced them after, put their hands up please. :)

Sorry, but I don't believe many will replace after taking them off. I'm sure some do/would but if the cam seals are relatively tight, should not really be an issue if the shrouds are missing.. I think it might for oil on the belt issues.
