EGR crossover pipe removal

Post by CajunMike »

I've got a '79 that has a 4-2-1 exhaust manifold that I want to remove the egr crossover pipe rather than block it off at the head. Im trying to remove the nut that holds the pipe at the bottom of the manifold. Is the nut a standard thread or reverse? Just making sure before I proceed further. I've put a lot of force on it trying to remove it as a standard thread and just want to make sure I'm going the right way to unscrew it. Would it be easier to cut the pipe first then try?

Thanks.

This is what I did:

If you look carefully at the threads, I believe they are normal.

I realized after cutting the tube that I could now get my impact gun on it, and probably could have broken int free eventually.

Welding was super quick and easy though. I cut some slits in the pipe so I could bend the little 'tabs' closed, then welded the seam with a mig welder. It took about 2 minutes start to finish and didn't cost a dime (Those big pipe plugs are EXPENSIVE.)

I tried removing that pipe also but no go...was gonna use my impact like you but didn't want to cut the pipe because wasn't sure if the impact would unthread it. Anyone know what size plug that is just in case?

I could'nt find a metric big enough so we used a pipe plug fitting,(brass I believe) and with some j-b weld (different thred)made it fit for good.

Thx for the replies. I'll probably end up welding it shut also if I can't get it out.
