Oil pump gasket?

Post by WBPDX »

I just removed the oil pan and pump from my 1979 CS2.

The oil pan was definitely leaking because of under-tightened bolts. They were so loose that I could remove almost all of them with just the tips of my fingers! Some actually seemed ready to fall to the ground, but were held in place by grime!

My question is: The oil pump has no gasket on it. There is a very small amount of RTV smeared around one side. I am guessing the oil pump was working fine this way, as there was more than enough oil in the top end, and no top end wear.

I can't move forward with other projects on the car until the oil pan is buttoned up. Is there any major risk reinstalling with just a bit of black RTV as it was? Should I make a new gasket? How thick?

I guess I should have just ordered a new oil pump gasket with the pan gasket, but I wasn't aware it would need to be unbolted at first...

I would just go to a local auto parts store and get some gasket material and cut to fit if you are in this much of a rush! I would not recommend using rtv only! loss of oil pressure is bad!

I don't want to be in this big of a rush. :(

I will see what the parts store has for thin gasket material...

It should have a thin paper gasket. Small RTV globs can squeeze out and get stuck elsewhere in the system and cause major engine damage. For something as important as the oil pump, consider getting the correct gasket.

I made a gasket. I think it will be fine; I just didn't want to completely stop other work for a week (Engine hoist in the way, and bottom end exposed to dirt\dust) while I waited.
