Fuel smell

Post by nibbes123 »

Can some one give advise as to why there is a strong smell of gas near the gas filler tube. There is no leak, rubber hose is soft. I have no clue as to the fumes. The car is a 1978 spider with a carb.
Thanks Nick

I'd be very suspicious of the large rubber hose at the filler. If it's cracked at the top, it might not drip, but you'd sure smell it.

I think it is a special feature of these cars. My trunk smells of gas. ALL hoses have been replaced and the clamps as well, using band clamps. The tank was removed, sandblasted inside and sealed, and the system has been pressure tested and showed no leaks. But when I open the trunk the smell is there.

Hi Nick, I know just what you mean. Mine 76 was so bad it stunk up the whole garage whenever I filled the tank. I had to leave it in the driveway with the trunk open and the floor pulled away for hours before I'd put it away. Checked the hoses and they seemed OK.

Here is what I do now. When I fill the tank I don't tighten the cap all the way. Seems like it builds up pressure that can't vent properly. It really has worked for me.

Now I know this isn't really the cure. But my car's charcoal cannister is missing in action probably by the PO. Also there is a little plastic 2 or 3 way valve that was once attached behind the tank by the fuel punp that broke years ago. I found its remains in the bottom of the trunk. I did join two of the lines together as instructed by Ralph which helped a little. Check back there, if the valve is MIA there may be some loose vent lines open.

There is a thread or two about the venting valve on here somewhere, but as I recall there isn't a source for a replacement.

Good Luck.
